Education is a high priority for Orangevale residents. Several elementary, middle and high schools in the San Juan Unified School District are located right in town. The district has very high academic standards; in fact, the SJUSD was one of the state's first large districts to develop a comprehensive and extensive set of standards based on those set by the state of California. In addition, a number of programs are available to meet the needs of adult learners, students whose first language is not English and exceptional students.
Furthermore, a number of institutions of higher learning are located in the area. UC Davis and California State University, Sacramento are located within minutes of Orangevale, while other schools such as the University of Stanford, UC Berkley, the University of San Francisco and San Jose State University are all within a few hours' drive.
Parks & Recreation
The Orangevale Parks and Recreation Department maintains a wide variety of facilities to meet the recreational needs of residents. Orangevale is home to seven parks encompassing more than 40 acres. Community and youth centers are available for gatherings, while several sports fields are available for soccer and softball. Three picnic areas of varying sizes are located throughout the town. The Orangevale Community Park features a horse arena available to residents at no charge. The parks department also offers classes and activities including dances, snowboarding and ski trips, swimming lessons and sports such as basketball and volleyball.
Orangevale was settled first by the Maidu tribe. Farmers and gold seekers from across the globe began to arrive nearly two centuries ago, drawn by tales of bountiful farmland and the mythic "mother lode." Land grants were made and divided, including the 1884 San Juanita Grant from the Mexican government. The "Orange Vale Colony" within this grant's land area was on the map by 1895. Thanks to an abundance of water and a new school, the community was successful agriculturally and economically by the turn of the century.
The town continues to draw new settlers today with its beauty, continuing economic growth, lovely spacious parks and outstanding schools. Located just minutes outside of the state's political hub, Orangevale residents enjoy a small-town atmosphere and excellent amenities, all in proximity to dynamic and historic Sacramento.
